As a truck driver, you know the importance of being able to quickly locate quality motels and hotels with safe, well-lit, semi-truck parking. Fortunately, there are many options across the country and some hotel chains make a point of catering to truck drivers. A bit of advance planning before heading out can make a huge difference in your health, safety, and comfort during your trip.
What makes for a good trucker motel or hotel? Semi-truck parking, for one. Many hotel parking lots, particularly those in city centers, simply aren’t designed to accommodate large trucks. You’ll want to book your stays at hotels where you can park. Another issue is security: A well-lit lot with a security camera and, even better, a security officer who makes regular rounds can give you the peace of mind you need for a good night’s rest.
Location is another factor: For most drivers, being able to pull off the highway and drive right up to a motel or hotel saves time and aggravation. Other amenities are largely a matter of personal preference. You might, for example, want a hotel that offers free coffee in the lobby, reliable W-Fi, early morning breakfast, or even a fitness center.
Trucker-Friendly Hotel Chains
There are several hotel chains in the U.S. that are considered trucker-friendly. Please note, however, that these chains may include individual properties that aren’t accommodating to truckers. Check ahead before selecting.
Super 8 Hotels
Super 8 is known for clean, comfortable, and basic hotel accommodations that are convenient and affordable. Rooms and suites include high-speed Internet, a breakfast item (or continental breakfast), and free coffee or tea.
Sleep Inn
As the name suggests, the rooms at Sleep Inn hotels are designed to help guests get a good night’s sleep so that they wake up refreshed and energized. These hotels typically provide a free hot breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and either a pool or fitness center.
EconoLodge
EconoLodge offers simple, comfortable, and affordable accommodations to travelers who just need a place to stay for the night. Rooms include free Wi-Fi and morning coffee.
Rodeway Inn
This is another motel that is designed to save you money while offering a comfortable night’s rest: Free coffee and Wi-Fi are the primary amenities. Rodeway is particularly known for its last-minute availability: If you’ve had a change of plans, there’s a decent chance you’ll be able to get a room at any Rodeway Inn along your route.
Motel 6/Studio 6
The iconic Motel 6 and Studio 6 are convenient accommodations that offer clean, comfortable rooms for short or extended stays. Enjoy free Wi-Fi, cable and lobby coffee during your stay. Truckers: We leave the lights on for you!
How to Find Truck Driver Hotel Discounts
While some drivers search trucker forums online to get hotel recommendations, there are a couple of drawbacks to this approach. For one thing, you are relying on another driver’s subjective opinion of the hotel and its amenities. Another issue is that the information presented may be outdated or inaccurate. This doesn’t mean that you can’t take the recommendation into consideration, but it’s a good idea to double-check the information that you receive.
